PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Despite claiming a victory in game three, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team came up short against Morgan St., falling 3-1 (30-27, 30-27, 16-30, 33-31) on Tuesday night in a conference decision at the Hytche Center.
The loss drops the Lady Hawks to 3-16 (1-4 MEAC) as the Lady Bears improve to 5-13 (3-0 MEAC) and remain undefeated in conference play.
Freshman Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn.) led the way for UMES with 13 kills and eight digs, while Chanita Wesley (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Stephanie Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) each added double-digit digs, finishing with 16 and 14 respectively. Mandisha Richardson's double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs paced the Bears.
Morgan St. started game one on a five-point run to take a 9-4 lead. The Lady Bears claimed their largest lead, seven points, midway through the game as they pushed the score to 21-14. However the Lady Hawks bounced back and the game went back and forth from there on but Morgan St. held on to win by a score of 30-27.
The Bears took control following a Hawk rally in the second game and with a seemingly impenetrable defense claimed an eight-point, 17-9, lead. The maroon and gray pulled within three but would get no closer as Morgan St. claimed the 30-27 victory.
Game three opened up with the teams trading points until an attack error at 6-6 by Esther Johnson sparked a six-point run for UMES. The Lady Hawks dominated the remainder of the contest, holding 10-point leads or more at some instances, and came away with the win 30-16.
The Bears held several three-point leads in game four, with UMES pulling within one point of the tie on several occasions. The Hawks tied the game at 20-20 with a kill from senior Eriel Jeffery (Highland, Calif.) and the game continued to remain tight as each team went point for point. But the maroon and grey couldn't regain the lead and the game ended on an error by Wesley, giving Morgan St. the 33-31 game four victory.
UMES will host Howard in their next matchup as they battle the Lady Bison in a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday, Oct. 8.
