PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks lost their homecoming matchup on February 12, dropping their game against the Florida A&M (FAMU) Rattlers, 70-57. All-MEAC nominee Corey Brown (Ruthville, VA/Mott CC) led the Hawks, scoring a game high 20 points in the loss.
FAMU (8-13, 6-7 MEAC) started the game on a run, outscoring UMES (2-20, 1-12 MEAC) 7-0 in the first two minutes of play. A trey by Aly Samabaly (Bamako, Mali/Duquesne) at 17:58 ended the Rattler run, and the Hawks used that momentum to close within two points of the lead over the next few possessions.
A dunk by junior Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill/Ellsworth CC) tied the score 14-14 midway through the first half, and Jareem Dowling (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands/Cecil CC) hit a three-pointer in the next possession to give UMES their first lead of the night, 17-14 with 9:26 remaining in the period.
However the lead was short lived, as FAMU hit two consecutive treys at 9:04 to take back the advantage. The Rattlers outscored the Hawks by 16 over the next eight minutes, sprinting on a 27-11 run to close the half. FAMU took a comfortable 41-28 lead going into the locker room.
Dowling led UMES at the half, scoring nine points to go along with five rebounds. Parham and Brown added six each, while James Pattman scored 11 to lead FAMU.
FAMU never relinquished the lead in the second half, pushing their advantage to as high as 19 points on several occasions. A pair of free-throws by Parham cut the lead down to 14 at 5:59, and freshman Ryan Leak (Jamaica, NY/Bayside HS) converted a three-point play to close within 11 at 3:14 but it was not enough, as the Rattlers went on to get the easy victory, 70-57.
Brown had a game high 20 points to lead all scorers, while Parham netted his 10th double-double in 13 games, tallying 13 points and 11 rebounds in 36 minutes. Dowling added 11 points and eight rebounds to round out the scoring effort for the Hawks. Pattman led FAMU, finishing with 15 points and two assists. Darius Glover and Tony Tate added 10 each.
UMES will battle Bethune-Cookman in their next contest, facing off against the Wildcats on Monday, February 14. Tip-off at the Hytche Center is slated for 7:30pm.
