UMES HAWKS FIGHT THROUGH MEAC TENNIS ROUND-UP

Alamonte Springs, Fla. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawk Tennis Team headed to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Round-Up at the Sanland Tennis Center hoping to get 2005 started on the right foot, instead, they found some things to build on and things to work on.

They opened the day against the Rattlers of Florida A & M (FAMU) and three hours after the match started were taking on the Bulldogs of South Carolina State. While they were shut out against FAMU they rebounded to take some points from South Carolina State. In doubles competition Shahan Sudusinghe (Peradeniya, Sri Lanka/St. Peter's College H.S.) and William Miller (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern H.S.) fell 8-1. In singles action Christopher Clarke (Washington D.C./Charles Herbert Flowers H.S.) fell to the Bulldogs number one seed 6-2, 6-0.

On day two the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College took on the Hawks, winning 7-0. The doubles tandem of Robin Schneider (Leverkusen, Germany/Crisfield H.S.) and George Ray (Takoma Park, MD/Largo H.S.) picked up a 5-4 win over Lewis and Marcato of BCC. Clarke in the #1 singles match fell 6-0, 6-2 and Harold Fowler (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) fell 6-1. Hasika Pamanuwa (Kandy, Sri Lanka (Trinity College H.S.) also picked up a point falling 6-2. Sudusinghe fell 6-1 in his match.

On the next day the Aggies of North Carolina A & T won 4-0 with solid performances coming from Clarke, falling 6-2, 6-1, Schenider 6-1, 6-0 and Ray 6-1, 6-1.

The Norfolk State Spartans were the final test for the Hawks but the green and gold won 4-0. While Clarke and Fowler scored as double partners (8-2) as did Ray and Schneider (8-1), the singles conte4st only had points from Clarke (6-0, 6-1) and Schneider (6-0, 6-1).

UMES looks to get back on track on March 11, 2005 in Washington D.C against the Howard Bison at 1:00 p.m.
