MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (6-37) dropped a six inning game to West Virginia University (17-22),10-1 as the game was called early due to rain storms. The Fighting Hawks ripped five extra base hits, but could not put a string of hits together to make an impact.
In the top of the first inning, Brandon McCabe just missed putting the maroon and gray up a run as he doubled to left field off the very top of the fence. The deep fly bounced off the top of the fence and ended up dropping in the field of play. In the bottom of the inning, six two-out hits scored six runs for the Mountaineers.
In the second inning, West Virginia added two more runs knocking UMES starter Ken Richardson from the game as he went one and a third innings giving up eight runs (seven earned) on ten hits.
In the top of the third, UMES finally put a run on the board as Joel Maher collected the Hawks third double in as many innings and scored on a two-out RBI-single by McCabe. UMES continued to threaten as they had two runners in scoring position with only one out, but once again could not find a way to get the runs home.
The Mountaineers pushed the score to 10-1 with a run in the sixth before the sky opened up causing the game to be called.
McCabe went 2-3 with a double and an RBI. The double was McCabe's fifth of the week and his 15th of the season. Ronald Quick also went 2-3 with a triple in the top of the sixth. Rob Benak replaced Richardson on the mound and pitched three and two-thirds innings giving up two runs on six hits
