Hawks comeback effort falls short in 13-9 loss to Hoyas

SUMMARY

TYSONS, Va. - The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks fell to the Georgetown Hoyas, 13-9, on Tuesday evening at Capital One Park.

THE SCORE

Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (5-24, 4-11) - 9

Georgetown Hoyas (17-15, 1-2) - 13

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the top of the first inning, Jonathan Gonzalez Perez  drove in Julian Jimenez on an RBI ground out to give UMES the lead. After a scoreless first inning from Richard De Jesus, the Hawks doubled their lead, 2-0, with a Christian Azcona sacrifice fly.

The Hoyas answered by scoring 10 unanswered runs from the bottom of the second inning until the bottom of the fourth inning to build a 10-2 advantage.

Trailing by eight, the Hawks rallied to narrow the deficit. In the top of the sixth, Azcona drove in Joshua Caldwell on an RBI single before Jimenez and Azcona came home to score on an error. Gonzalez Perez then laced an RBI single up the middle to both score Darrius Brown and cap off a four-run sixth.

In the following frame, trailing 10-6, Caldwell scored on another Georgetown error to get within three runs. Even though the Hoyas added a run in the bottom of the seventh, an RBI single from Diego Aponte and an RBI walk from Bronson Taylor made the score 11-9.

Unfortunately for UMES, Georgetown tallied a pair of runs in the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth to cement a 13-9 midweek win.
