HARRISONBURG, VA. - The George Mason volleyball team defeated the Lady Hawks 3-1 (30-19, 31-29, 28-30, 30-21) in the third match of the JMU Invitational on Friday. Freshman Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn.) notched a season high 11 kills to lead UMES. The loss drops the Lady Hawks to 1-7 on the season.
In game one, the Patriots (2-6) grabbed a 7-4 lead and never looked back to earn a 30-19 victory. GMU built a 22-10 lead late in the game behind back-to-back kills by Jacqueline Kohler. UMES wrestled back as Eller added three of her kills in the first game, but the Patriots closed out the frame with a kill from Janelle Wilson.
Game two was a hard-fought affair that saw the two teams tied at 29 late in the game. The Lady Hawks took advantage of six GMU service errors and took a three point lead midway through the frame. However, the Patriots garnered the final two points on UMES attacking errors to take the game and a 2-0 lead.
The maroon and gray bounced back in game three and the two teams battled to a 27-all tie. GMU blocking errors gave UMES the game's next two points, and a kill by freshman Amanda Swenson (South Windsor, Conn.) led the Lady Hawks to the 30-28 victory.
The fourth game was another tough contest. The maroon and gray tied the game twice and took a one point lead at 15-14 behind kills by Swenson, Eriel Jeffery (Highland, Calif.) and Adora Luster (Woodbridge, Va.), but that was as close as they would get as GMU cruised to the 30-21 victory.
Eller added 14 digs to go along with her 11 kills, while Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel) fell two kills shy of a triple-double, finishing with eight kills, 12 digs and 26 assists to go along with four service aces. Jeffery added six kills, while Swenson, Luster and Chanita Wesley (Minneapolis, Minn.) each added five.
Kohler had a game high 12 kills for the Patriots, while Wilson added 11.
The Hawks will finish play at the JMU Invitational on Saturday as they battle the host Dukes in a 2 p.m. decision.
