Box Score

HAMPTON, VA. - Hampton jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and never looked back as the Pirates defeated UMES 73-64 at the Convocation Center Saturday night.

Jaz Cowan scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half as Hampton took a 38-26 lead at the break. Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.) had 10 points at the half and went 4-for-6 from the charity stripe as the Hawks went to the line 17 times compared to just four by the Pirates.

Hampton (3-7, 2-1 MEAC) pushed their lead to as many as 15 points as Rodrick Coleman hit a trey with 14:19 remaining. However, UMES continued to stay aggressive and attacked the basket on every possession, helping to create fouls. The maroon and gray made 17-of-26 free throw attempts in the second half to stay within reach, but the Hawks could not overcome a late three-pointer by Rashad West and some clutch free throw shooting by the Pirates.

Troy Jackson (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) led UMES for the second straight game as he scored 16 points and grabbed seven boards. Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md.) had 15 points and six rebounds while Parham finished with a double-double of 14 points and 13 boards.

Cowan's 19 points led the Pirates while Jeff Granger, Junior Pehoua, and Bruce Brown added 11 each.

The Hawks outrebounded their opponents 40-33 and forced 26 HU fouls. The maroon and gray also outscored the Pirates 24-12 off the bench and had 18 second chance points compared to 14 from Hampton.

UMES (4-9, 1-2 MEAC) will play Norfolk State in their next matchup. The Hawks face the Spartans on January 9 in a road contest beginning at 8 pm.
