Hampton, Va. - The fourth seeded Lady Hawks Volleyball team toppled #5 Delaware State University (DSU) 3-0 (30-24, 30-27, 30-23) to earn a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Tournament win and a chance to take on the top seeded Florida A & M (FAMU)Rattlers at 5:00 pm today.
"We played well this afternoon," said Head Coach Alex Temkin. "I am pleased with the way we attacked the ball and the defense we played. Most importantly we were able to beat them in three games; that will allow us to have the most rest for our 5:00 match."
The Hawks were paced by Melanie Durimel with 12 kills. Caylin Woodward, Holiday Eller and Adora Luster all added seven kills each.
The defense that Temkin spoke of tallied 80 digs and five blocks. Woodward had a whopping 20 digs while Stephanie Braxton dug out 18 balls. Yael Rozner had 12 more digs and Chanita Wesley chipped in with 10.
Rozner added 31 assists and six kills.
Ayanna Dyette had 18 kills to lead the Hornets (11-23). Kinga Muszynski and Laura Huculak had 15 digs each in the loss.
UMES picked up its 19th win to 14 losses with their third defeat of DSU this season. They hope that illustrious 20th win in the FAMU match with a trip to the finals also on the line.
