PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The UMES volleyball team won two games before falling to Morgan State 3-2 (30-27, 26-30, 30-19, 32-30, 16-14) in a non-conference decision Thursday night at the Hytche Center.
Senior Melanie Durimel (Neuilly sur Marne, France/Univ. de Marne la Valle) paced four Lady Hawks in double-digit kills. Durimel finished with 20 kills with .246 attack percentage while sophomore Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn./St. Benilde-St. Margaret's H.S.) contributed 18 kills. Adora Luster (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park H.S.) and Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica H.S.) added 12 kills each.
Woodward also led the Hawks in digs with 23 with Stephanie Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass H.S.) chipping in with 22 digs of her own. Setter Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel/Kiriat Haim H.S.) added a double-double of 56 assists and 14 digs.
Jeniqua Moran and Ivanti Bush had 24 kills apiece to lead the Lady Bears. Camille Coleman, O'Tasha Williams and Esther Johnson added to the offense with 11 kills each. Ashley Preston dug out a match-high 27 balls.
The first game was a close knit contest that featured 13 ties and several lead changes. Two Moran kills in the final moments gave MSU the 30-27 win.
UMES (17-14) outscored the Lady Bears 15-7 to open the second game. An attack error by Bush at 20-11 gave the Lady Hawks a nine-point advantage, their largest of the match. Morgan State closed within two points of the lead at 25-23 but crucial errors by MSU allowed the maroon and gray to take the game two victory.
In game three, Morgan State (20-8) never trailed after jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The Lady Bears opened up their biggest lead, 22-12, on a bad set by Rozner. Game four was a seesaw contest that featured 12 ties. Kills by Eller and Durimel gave the Hawks the 32-30 victory. MSU took the fifth and deciding game on two consecutive kills by Moran.
The Lady Hawks end their regular season on Friday, November 10 with a senior night contest against Winston-Salem State at 7 p.m. in the Hytche Center.
