DOVER, DEL. - Joe Dickens scored a game high 19 points as Delaware State (DSU) stung UMES Monday night, 64-48, in a conference decision at Memorial Hall.
Darrin Shine and Tracey Worley added 16 and 14, respectively, to round out the scoring effort for the Hornets.
The Fighting Hawks were led by three players with 10 points each. Freshmen Qavotstaraj Waddell (Norfolk, Va.) scored his career high 10 points and also grabbed six rebounds while Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md.) added four steals and three assists to go along with his point total. Senior Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.) grabbed his tenth double-double of the season as he finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
With the win, DSU improves to 14-11 overall and 12-1 in conference while the Fighting Hawks fall to 5-17 (2-10 MEAC).
Troy Roundtree capped a 7-0 run with a jumper to give the Hornets a 19-10 lead with 4:46 left in the first half. The maroon and gray responded with a 9-0 run and evened the game at 19 on a three-pointer by Brooks with 2:38 left in the half.
Delaware State held a slim three point lead at the half, 23-20. Both teams combined for just 17-of-56 shoting in the first period.
The Hornets scored the first three points of the second half before UMES rallied to take the lead. Parham capped a 7-0 run with a tip-in to give the Hawks a 27-26 lead with 16:22 left to play. DSU answered with a 6-0 spurt, and opened up a 32-27 lead on a lay up by Shine with 13:38 remaining.
Delaware State led 36-35 before pulling ahead for good. Delaware State went on a 16-1 run over the next four minutes, and opened up a 52-36 lead on a free throw by Dickens with 5:40 left in the game.
UMES is off for a week, next facing off with Florida A&M for Homecoming on Saturday, February 18. Tip off at the Hytche Center is slated for 4 p.m.
