TRACK & FIELD COMPLETES FIRST DAY OF CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

LANDOVER, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) indoor track and field team completed the first day of competition at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships. Dionne Wright took first in the women's shot put and grabbed 10 points for UMES in the team totals while Danieth Pryce and Tanesha Wisdom finished third and fourth, respectively, in the preliminary round of the 200m dash and qualified for the finals on Saturday.

Pryce also qualified for the final round of the 60m dash as she took third in the preliminaries while Wisdom moves on to the 400m dash finals after her fourth place finish in the opening round on Friday.

Petagay O'Connor and Sherita Harriott finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the women's high jump and grabbed seven team points for UMES while the distance medley team of Mundit, Wisdom, Sherie Brown and Janeth Chelangat took seventh in 12.54.

On the men's side, Dwayne Robinson and Ronnie Beard finished second and fourth in the men's preliminary 60m hurdles to qualify for the final round. Beard also moved on to the finals of two other events, the 200m and 400m dash, after posting seventh and eighth place finishes, respectively.

William McCollough also qualified for the final round of the 400m dash after his seventh place finish.

The men's distance medley team of McCollough, Clayton James, Geoffrey Rutto and Alfred Singoei grabbed six team points for UMES with their third place finish while freshman Jamahl Strachan took home a sixth place finish in the pole vault.

Strachan finished third in the men's high jump heptathlon while Christopher Morrison filled the void left by the injured Kimani Kirton and finished first in the shot put heptathlon.

After five events the Lady Hawks are currently fifth in the team rankings. The Fighting Hawks stand in eighth place after four events.

The MEAC Indoor Championships continue on Saturday, Feb. 18 beginning with the Pole Vault, Shot Put and Pentathlon at 9 a.m. The heptathlon event will conclude tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m run at 9:30 a.m.
