PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Three players scored in double figures for Morgan State as the Bears evened their season series with UMES Saturday afternoon. The Hawks lost their matchup against Morgan State, 67-60, at the Hytche Center.
UMES (5-20, 2-13 MEAC) got a season high 29 points and 18 rebounds from senior Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.) Parham's 29 points were also a career high. Freshman Qavotstaraj Waddell (Norfolk, Va.) finished with a game high three blocks while Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md.) had a game high four steals on the defensive end.
Joseph McClean scored 17 points to lead the Bears while Demetrius Branch added 13. Clinton Cunningham chipped in with 10 points to round out the scoring efforts for Morgan State (4-22, 4-11 MEAC).
The Bears shot 46% from the field compared to 37% shooting by the Hawks. UMES owned the advantage from the charity stripe but only converted 11-of-27 from the free-throw line. Morgan State, on the other hand, made six of their 10 attempts.
The maroon and gray opened the game on a 15-4 run but Morgan State responded with a spurt of their own over the next 10 minutes. A Branch trey at 14:48 spurned an 18-4 run by the Bears and gave Morgan State their first lead since the 19:41 mark.
Shaun Warrick (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a 3-pointer to give the advantage back to the Hawks but Dedrick Jenkins's jumper at :51 put Morgan State within one point of the lead at the half, 27-26.
UMES tied the score five times in the second half, the last coming at 11:32, before the Bears pulled away with a comfortable advantage. McLean's jumper at 5:59 capped a 15-4 run by Morgan State and gave the Bears an 11-point lead, their largest advantage of the game.
The maroon and gray closed to within seven points of the lead on two occasions but MSU sealed their win from the charity stripe as they hit 3-of-5 in the final 30 seconds of play.
The Hawks take on Coppin State in their next contest. UMES battles the Eagles on Monday, February 27 in a 7:30 p.m. home contest at the Hytche Center.
