FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Three University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) track stars competed yesterday at the NCAA Championships. It was the first time in school history that the Hawks have sent an athlete, much less three, to the event. They didn't disappoint.
Sophomore Jason Daley (Manchester, Jamaica/G.C. Foster Coll.) had the best finish of any Hawk. Daley took 11th place overall in the men's long jump with a distance of 7.44 meters (24.4094488 feet). Daley was seventh in his heat. His eleventh place finish was better than athletes from Washington, Indiana and North Carolina State Universities.
He provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships at the Hawks' first indoor meet of the season on December 10. Daley recorded the 10th highest mark in the country this season in the men's long jump with his leap of 7.71 meters (25.29 feet).
Dwayne Robinson (Kingston, Jamaica/Mid-American Nazarene Univ.) attended his second straight NCAA Championships in the hurdles. He last competed in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May of 2005. Robinson ran a strong time of 7.93 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. The time, however, did not qualify him for the finals and he finished in 15th place overall.
The junior qualified in the men's 60m hurdles at UMES' Coach O Invite. That time put him 14th in the nation in that event.
Fellow junior Danieth Pryce (Kingston, Jamaica/ G.C. Foster Coll.) made her NCAA Championship debut in the 60-meter dash. Pryce finished 19th in the event with a time of 7.56 seconds. Her time also failed to qualify her for the finals but it was still very respectable.
Her qualifying time of 7.32 came at the 2006 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships and ranked her 15th in the nation in her event. That time also broke a conference record.
All three athletes take this outstanding accomplishment to the outdoor season which begins March 24, 2006 at the Cape Fear Classic in Wilmington, N.C.
