UMES FALLS IN NON-CONFERENCE MATCH TO CANISIUS

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Canisius downed UMES 3-0 (30-21, 30-26, 30-22) in a non-conference match this afternoon at the Hytche Center to hand the Lady Hawks its first loss of the season.

UMES (3-1) got 11 kills and nine digs from freshman Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica H.S.). Stephanie Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass H.S.) added 14 digs while Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel/Kiriat Haim H.S.) chipped in with a match-high 29 assists. Maja Baltic (Belgrade, Serbia/KBG) finished with eight kills on 43% attacking percentage while adding a match-high four aces.

The Griffs were led by Mary Boller's 11 kills. Brittany Gerde finished with a double-double of 25 assists and 13 digs.

Game two proved to be the toughest contest between the two squads as neither team went up by more than six points. A Baltic attack error gave Canisius (4-1) their largest advantage of the game at 18-12 but UMES closed within one point of the lead at 25-26 as Baltic served up her fourth service ace of the match.

The Lady Hawks hit the road for their next contest, next playing in the LaSalle Tournament this weekend in Philadelphia. UMES takes on Rider and Bucknell on Fri., Sept. 1 and face off with the host Explorers and UNC-Wilmington on Sat., Sept. 2.
