DOVER, DEL. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team won a difficult 3-2 decision against Delaware State in a MEAC contest Sunday evening in Dover.
The Lady Hawks took the first two games 37-35 and 30-26, but the Lady Hornets rallied to tie the match after winning 30-19 in each of the next two games. UMES won the fifth-game tie-breaker 15-12. The maroon and gray improved to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in conference while DSU fell to 0-10 (0-1 MEAC).
Freshman Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica H.S.) led four UMES players in double figures with 17 kills. Sophomore Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn./St. Benilde-St. Margaret's H.S.) added 14 kills and nine digs, while Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel/Kiriat Haim H.S.) had a double-double of 52 assists and 10 digs for the Lady Hawks.
Melanie Durimel (Neuilly sur Marne, France/Univ. de Marne la Valle) and Adora Luster (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn H.S.) chipped in with 13 and 12 kills,respectively.
Cassandra Joyner and Ayana Dyette led Delaware State with 19 kills each.
In the first game, the Lady Hawks scored six straight points to open up a 16-10 lead. DSU scored 19 of the next 32 points, and tied the game at 29 on a kill by Joyner. The Hornets fought off five elimination points before committing back-to-back errors to give UMES the game.
In game two, the score was 10-10 before the maroon and gray pulled ahead. The Lady Hawks opened up a 21-14 lead on a kill by Rozner. Delaware State could get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
In game three, the Lady Hornets never trailed after scoring the first eight points. Delaware State opened up their biggest lead, 25-12, on a kill by Dyette. In game four, the score was 7-7 before Delaware State pulled away for good. The Hornets capped off a 7-0 run with a kill by Kinga Muszynski to open up a 19-10 lead. DSU ended the game by scoring six of the last seven points.
In the fifth and deciding game, UMES scored five of the first six points and never trailed. After Delaware State pulled to within 7-4, the Lady Hawks scored four of the next six points to open up an 11-6 lead. The match finally ended on a kill by Woodward.
The maroon and gray returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 19 with a conference decision against Howard at the Hytche Center.
