PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Lady Hawk volleyball team lost a tough contest to Bucknell in the second match of the La Salle Tournament Friday evening. UMES dropped a 3-1 (25-30, 30-27, 32-34, 25-30) decision to the Bison and fell to 3-3 on the season.
Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn./St. Benilde-St. Margaret's H.S.) paced the Lady Hawks with a double-double of 19 kills and 15 digs and also hit .310 (19-6-42). Melanie Durimel (Neuilly sur Marne, France University de Marne La Vallee) added 18 kills and Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica H.S.) followed with 13. Setter Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel/Kiriat Haim H.S.) contributed 43 assists, 13 digs and three service aces, while Stephanie Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass H.S.) had 20 digs.
Sarah Groman led Bucknell with 22 kills while Jenna Henderson finished with 14 kills and 11 digs.
In game one, the maroon and gray came within a point of the Bison at 16-15 after an attack error by Henderson. Bucknell then went on a 7-1 run to take a 23-16 lead. The Bison took game one 30-25.
However, UMES evened the match score at 1-1 by narrowly edging out the Bison in game two, 30-27. A Durimel kill midway through the game spurred a 7-2 run by the maroon and gray to give the Lady Hawks their first lead at 20-19. Several Bison errors in the final moments helped seal the game two win for the Lady Hawks.
Both squads fought hard in game three, virtually trading point-for-point until Bucknell managed to take the game 34-32 after a a kill by senior Amanda Grossmann closed it out.
UMES continues play at the La Salle Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 2, with matches against the host Explorers at 2 p.m. and UNC-Wilmington at 4:30 p.m.
