PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's basketball team had four players in double figures but it was not enough as Florida A&M (FAMU) took down the Hawks, 65-55 in a MEAC decision Saturday evening at the Hytche Center.
UMES lost for the seventh time in eight games and fell to 3-15 overall and 0-6 in conference play. Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown H.S.) and Milutin Mirjacic (Uzice, Serbia/Uzice Economy School) led the Hawks 13 points each. Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) and Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding H.S.) each added 10 points.
FAMU, which improved to 10-9 overall and 5-2 in the MEAC, shot 42 percent from the field and outscored UMES 34-14 in the paint. The maroon and gray was out-rebounded 50-33 and converted 8-of-17 from the charity stripe compared to 19-of-29 for Florida A&M.
Darius Glover finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for FAMU while Rome Sanders added a game-high 18 points. Brian Greene chipped in with 10 points.
Glover's lay-up at 11:53 in the second half spurred a 16-6 run for the Rattlers over the next eight minutes. A Sanders free-throw with 1:06 to play gave FAMU a 13-point lead, its largest of the night.
"We simply didn't make plays," UMES head coach Larry Lessett said. "We played with heart and courage, but there were streaks where we just didn't score."
The Hawks were within striking distance in the first half after cutting an eight-point Rattler lead down to two with just under 10 seconds left in the half. A Sanders lay-up at the buzzer gave FAMU a four-point cushion at the break, 31-27.
UMES will look to get in the win column on Monday when they face Bethune-Cookman in a home decision at 7:30 pm.
