VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - For the fourth straight week the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) has the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week honor. For the third time, that honor belongs to Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Univ. at Albany). This is her second straight win.
Johnson earned the award after being named Most Valuable Performer (MVP) of the 2007 UMES Comfort Inn Classic. In the four matches at the tournament and an earlier match that week against Coppin State University UMES posted five wins to run their streak to 12 straight wins.
Johnson had 65 kills and 18 digs in the four matches of the tournament. For the week she hit .318 with 84 kills and five solo blocks.
Shaylin Sommer (Atascadero, Calif./ Atascadero H.S.) also earned some recognition from the MEAC, being included as a top performer. She served eight aces in the win over Robert Morris.
