VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - For the third straight week, and fourth overall, the Hawk's Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Univ. at Albany) is the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week. The Hawks have won the award for five straight weeks and also ran their record to 17-3, 6-0 in the MEAC and own the nation's fourth longest winning streak with 15 victories.
Johnson earned the award for her play in giving the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) three conference wins this week, a 3-0 sweep of Howard and two 3-2 wins over Morgan State and Delaware State. In those three matches Johnson tallied 74 kills and 29 digs while averaging a hitting percentage of .285 in 13 total games. She had a season high equaling 30 kills on 71 total attacks (.268) in the win over the bears. She then posted 27 kills and 16 digs against the Hornets.
Shaylin Sommer (Atascadero, Calif./ Atascadero H.S.) also received a nod as an other top performer for her five aces against Delaware State.
After playing two five game matches on back to back days the Hawks take the week off, not returning to the court until Friday night, October 12th at 7:00 pm when they face Hampton in a conference contest. That matches kicks off Hawk Hysteria, the vent formerly known as Midnight Madness.
