NORFOLK,Va. - The Fighting Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and tied the game up at three in the fifth frame but the bats of Old Dominion University (ODU) got hot. In the sixth inning they pounded out six runs, ten total over the next two innings, leading to a 16-3 victory for the Monarchs (2-0).
Joel Gonzalez was the hero for the Hawks (0-2), going 3-4 at the dish and driving home two RBI. Eric Gaines stayed hot, going 1-3 with a run. The other RBI came off the bat of catcher Justin Hoban who was 1-4 on the day. James Walls and Tyler Winch also picked up hits in the outing.
Sophomore lefty Mike Roberts (0-1) took the loss for the Hawks. He started solid giving up three runs in his first four innings of work but was done in the fifth inning where the Monarchs touched him up for four more runs. He finished the day with seven runs allowed, five were earned. He had two Ks and two walks. Kevin Hillenburg, Ken Richardson, Carl Huber and Winch all saw action on the mound. Winch was the most effective, giving up one hit in one inning of work.
ODU starter Anthony Shawler got the win, going five innings with seven strikeouts. UMES touched him up for six hits and three earned runs before his exit. The Monarchs' pen then took over with four different pitchers who combined to issue just one hit and one walk the rest of the way. In all they combined for 11 strikeouts.
ODU's freshman Jake McAloose continued his hot hitting as he was 3-6 with three runs and four RBI. The Monarchs also got their frist round tripper of the year from David Burns who tallied three RBI on the day. Mike Zahn added three more RBI, going 25, both were triples. All but two starters had at least one RBI for ODU and the team tallied 12 base on balls and 12 hits to the Hawks seven. Each team committed two errors.
Game three of the three game series is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 pm.
