NORFOLK, Va - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) hardballers had their offense stifled in game three of the series against Old Dominion University (ODU) and the Monarchs (3-0) took the series sweep by a score of 18-2. With the loss the Hawks drop to 0-3 in the young season.
UMES managed just five hits in the game. Two came off the bat of Justin Hoban who went 2-3 on the day and added a run. Eric Gaines continued his hot hitting with a 1-4 effort pushing his average to .400 for the year. James Walls and Josh Dean accounted for the other Hawk hits. It was the first collegiate hit for Dean when he singled through the right side in the sixth inning, also accounting for the only UMES RBI of the game. Kenny Richardson had the other Hawk run.
The Fighting Hawks were down 4-0 heading into the fourth inning. Hoban led-off with a double to left center. Following a pair of strikeouts designated hitter Derrick Baker would reach on an error by pitcher Ryan Bergh and Hoban would cross the plate making it a 4-1 game.
It would stay that way heading into the bottom of the fifth when ODU would explode for seven runs.
UMES got one more in the sixth when Richardson would draw the only Hawk walk of the game. He would be followed two batters later by Hoban who was hit by a pitch. The Dean single would then score Richardson.
The Monarchs added three more run in the bottom of that inning and four in the eighth.
Jamar Cadejuste took the loss for UMES going four and one third innings giving up 11 hits and nine runs, all earned. Daniel Sterling, Mike Roberts and Tyler Winch would all take the hill for the Hawks. Roberts worked one and one third inning of one hit ball.
For ODU Mike Zahn and Tyler Belcher had four hits and three RBI each to lead the Monarch attack. The team totaled 19 hits. Chris Keenan scored four runs and had a pair of hits while Nick Erdman had three RBI, two hits and three runs scored.
Bergh picked up the win for ODU striking out eight in six innings of work. He allowed just four Hawk hits and the two runs, one of which was earned.
UMES is off until the weekend when the Tigers of Savannah State come to town for a three game series. On Saturday, February 17th the two teams play a double header starting at noon.
