DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The Bethune-Cookman (BCC) Wildcats knocked down four free-throws in the final second to hold off the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's basketball team, 49-48, in a conference decision Monday night in Daytona Beach.
A free-throw by Antonio McMillion at 1:33 gave the Hawks a two-point advantage and capped a 10-2 run by UMES that spanned almost seven minutes. BCC's DeWayne Pettus tied the score at 45-45 with 38 seconds left before the Hawks were called for two critical fouls with just one second left in regulation. Josh Cummings and Damitrius Coleman each knocked down a pair of free-throws to give the Wildcats a comfortable four point lead at 49-45. Corey Brown's 3-ball at the buzzer ended the game at 49-48.
UMES (3-23, 0-14 MEAC) was paced by three players in double figures. McMillion led the way with a game-high 17 points while Brown and Ed Tyson chipped in with 12 each. Tyson fell one rebound shy of a double-double and pulled down nine boards for the Hawks while Brown had a game-high five steals on the defensive end.
Bethune-Cookman (7-18, 5-10 MEAC) got 16 points from Pettus. No other Wildcat scored in double figures.
UMES outscored BCC 28-16 in the paint but was outscored 26-0 in bench points. The Hawks dished out just five assists on the night but stole the ball nine times compared to four by the Wildcats.
The maroon and gray returns to action on February 24 for a homecoming and senior day contest against Morgan State at 4 pm.
