PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Jason Wills led four Aggies in double figures as North Carolina A&T (NCAT) picked up a 70-57 win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Saturday afternoon at the Hytche Center. With the win the Aggies improve to 10-12 (6-4 MEAC) and sweep the season series with UMES. The Hawks fall to 3-19 (0-10) with the loss.
Sophomore Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) tied the game high with 20 points on 6-13 shooting from 3-point range. He was the only Hawk in double figure scoring. Danijel Krleski (Jagodina, Serbia/Svetozar Markovic H.S.) chipped in with a career-high nine points off the bench while Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown H.S.) pulled down a game high 10 rebounds.
"Ed did everything tonight and we had a tremendous effort in the second half,"said UMES Head Coach Larry Lessett. "Danijel played great and Milo really stepped it up. I feel bad for all the kids because they deserved to win with all of their effort."
Willis finished with 20 points in 24 minutes while Walter Booth and Steven Rush contributed 11 each. Angelo Hernandez added 10.
UMES shot 35% from the field (20-for-57) compared to a blistering 63% by NCAT (26-for-41). The maroon and gray had a better outing from beyond the arc and made 10-of-31 from 3-point range while holding the Aggies to just 3-of-11 shooting. UMES committed 25 fouls compared to 19 by NCAT, leading to 15 more free-throw attempts by the Aggies. NCAT converted 15-of-26 from the charity stripe while the Hawks finished 7-of-11.
Freshman Milutin Mirjacic (Uzice, Serbia/Uzice Economic School) scored four of the first seven points for UMES and led the Hawks to a 7-0 run to open the game. The Aggies slowly chipped away at the lead and took a one point advantage at 13:38 when a Tavarus Alston lay-up put NCAT up 16-15.
A trey by Rush with 10 seconds left gave the Aggies an 11-point lead, its largest of the half. NCAT held a 37-26 advantage at the break.
Glenn Nelson's 3-pointer early in the second half gave NCAT a 13-point advantage. The maroon and gray responded with an 8-2 run over the next two minutes and cut the lead to single digits at seven, keyed by a Corey Brown (Richmond, Va./Mott C.C.) trey at 17:29.
Rush hit a lay-up at 12:25 to put the Aggies back up by 13. Baskets by McMillion and Krleski over the next five minutes closed the deficit down to four, but a lay-up by Wills and free-throws from Booth pushed the lead to nine points. Wills scored the final seven points for the Aggies to seal the win.
The Hawks will look to rebound Monday with a conference match against South Carolina State at 7:30 pm at the Hytche Center.
