MORGANTOWN, W.V. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) fell in a baseball doubleheader to the West Virginia University (WVU) at Hawley Field by scores of 8-4 and 10-2.
In game one, West Virginia (20-10) scored one run in the third, before rattling off four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The fourth inning was highlighted by catcher Justin Parks' double to left centerfield that sent two runners home.
The Hawks (7-26) exploded in the sixth inning with four runs of their own to make the game a 7-4 affair. Joel Gonzalez led-off with a single through the right side and scored on a Justin Hoban double to right. Kevin Hillenburg followed with an infield single. After a Josh Dena ground out put Hillenburg on second and Hoban on third Tyler Winch singled through the left side, picking up an RBI. With two outs Tyler Love singled throught the right side, scoring Hillenburg and moving Winch to second. Derrick Baker would then reap some good luck, reaching on an error by pitcher Brendan Bergerson. That would laod the bases for Eric Gaines, who drew a walk and picked up an easy RBI.
Mountaineer starter Bergerson (3-0) was credited with the win as he allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work. Freshman Chris Enourato pitched in relief and picked up his fourth save of the season.
Kenny Richardson (1-3) took the loss as he allowed seven runs on six hits and walked eight batters.
The Mountaineers had a big second inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead in game two. First baseman Jordon Yost got things started with an RBI-double to bring in the first run. Designated hitter Michael Burger would eventually score Yost with a sacrifice fly. Centerfielder Adam White drove in two runs with a single up the middle and West Virginia would light up the scoreboard two more times before the end of the inning.
The Mountaineers scored four more runs to seal to the victory.
The Hawks only tallied a pair of runs in the game, both coming in the sixth inning. With two outs Gaines was hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch. A Gonzalez single plated Gaines and on the throw he wound up on second. Hoban singled to right center and picked up the RBI on Gonzalez's run to account for the UMES scoring.
WVU's Josh Whitlock improved to 4-3 on the season as he allowed only two runs on three hits in 6.2 innings on the mound. Eric Saffell pitched 2.1 innings of relief, striking out one and allowing two hits.
UMES starter Jamar Cadejuste (0-6) took the loss as he was responsible for all 10 of West Virginia's runs.
Gonzalez and Hoban each had three hits on the day and Hillenburg and Love had a pair.
UMES now heads to North Carolina A & T State this weekend for a three game MEAC series.
