HAWKS' JOHNSON NAMED MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Sept. 10, 2007

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.), the 6-3 middle blocker who transferred from the University of Albany, is already making her presence felt for the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). This past weekend she helped guide her team to a 2-1 mark at the Lafayette College Invitational and in doing so earned her first nod at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week.

She recorded 26 kills and eight digs while hitting an average of .438 in a win over Lafayette. The outside hitter averaged 18.6 kills and 7.3 digs per match to help the Lady Hawks to a 2-1 record that included a win over regional power George Washington University. Johnson also recorded 3.5 total blocks (2 solo), one assist and one ace during three matches played.

On the season the sophomore is hitting .187 and leads the team with 103 total kills. She will lead her Hawks into battle on Friday when UMES travels to face Morgan State in their first MEAC match of the season.

Florida A&M University's Jovana Blazeski was named Rookie of the Week.
