EASTON, Pa. - Up two games to none the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) seemed poised to take their opening match of the Lafayette College Invitational but it wasn't to be as the Hawks allowed the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) to take the next two game and force a fifth and deciding game where FDU edged out the Hawks.
UMES (2-3) took game one fairly easily, posting a 30-23 win and continued the momentum in game two where they topped FDU by the same score. The Knights (3-2) rallied for a 30-22 win in the third game and posted a win in game four 30-28, just edging out the Hawks. UMES had a chance to not let the match slip away but fell in game five 15-13.
UMES had a solid outing from Whitney Johnson who led all attackers with 19 kills (hitting .250) while teammate Holiday Eller put together an impressive 18 kills and eight digs. Leah Amundson had a whopping 20 digs while teammate Christina Estebane' had 16 digs and 48 assists. Caylin Woodward had nine kills and 13 digs.
Woodward led all Hawk blockers with 3.5 while Sam Chukwura had 2.5. Together UMES had a season high 11 team blocks. Estebane' had six service aces while Chanita Wesley pitched in with five aces of her own.
FDU got 16 kills from Rebecca Tenney and 14 from Lauren Boothby. Ruth Levy had 17 digs while Boothby had five solo blocks.
UMES hopes to rebound tomorrow when they play the host Lepoards at 10:00 am and meet regional rival George Washington later in the day.
