FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) seemed on their way to a fairly easy win taking games one and two from Providence College by scores of 30-17 and 30-18 but the Friars rebounded and took games three and four (30-28 & 30-25) forcing a game five that went to extra points but ended in a Hawk win 17-15.
Whitney Johnson pounded out a season high 30 kills and hit .434 as UMES topped Providence for the second straight year. Caylin Woodward recorded her seventh double double of the season notching 14 kills and 22 digs while adding six assists and four service aces. Their efforts have led the Hawks to five straight wins as the maroon and grey sport a 7-3 record. Providence fell to 8-5 with the loss. UMES snapped a five match winning streak for the Friars.
After getting beat in the first two games, the Friars showed resiliency by winning the next two games by narrow margins. The fifth and deciding game was back and forth right until the end when UMES earned the victory on a Johnson kill and a Jeanette Toney error.
Samantha Chukwura posted ten kills in the match while Holiday Eller did her one better, tallying 11. Christina Estebane had 64 assists in the match, a season high, while falling one short of 30 with 29 digs, another season high, and adding seven kills.
As a team UMES hit an impressive .331 while holding Providence to just .167
The Friars were led by senior Sarah Fleming and junior Jeanette Toney who had 17 kills a piece. Fleming also added 12 digs and four assists. Junior setter Sara Sheehan had 49 assists and a game-high four service aces. Junior Aida Cadres added a solid effort recording a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs.
UMES plays two matches tomorrow in the Sacred Heart Invitational facing St. Francis (NY) and the host Pioneers.
