FAIRFIELD, Conn. - It should come as no surprise, but shortly after the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) defeated Sacred Heart to win their tournament, Whitney Johnson of the Hawks was named tournament MVP while Holiday Eller and Christina Estebane joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
Johnson was Ms. All-everything for the Hawks this weekend as UMES won three straight matches to take the title of the Sacred Heart University Invitational and in doing so, run their winning streak to seven matches.
In three matches, Johnson tallied 71 kills, four aces, 24 digs and ten blocks. Even more impressively she took 127 swings and committed just 13 errors. That equals an amazing hitting percentage of .457.
Eller was also solid for the Hawks. She tallied 38 kills, nine digs, three aces and eight blocks. Estebane was at the start of most of those kills, tallying 143 assists. While that is impressive in its own right, for good measure she added 15 kills, four aces, 48 digs and four blocks.
"We had a great tournament," said Head Coach Don Metil. "These three young ladies, and many others played some inspired volleyball. A team effort is responsible for our success to date, success we hope continues."
Annie Archer and Kendra Sloan of Sacred Heart, Elizabeth Flynn of Providence and Jadelyn Castillo of St. Francis (NY) rounded out the All-Tournament Team.
