RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) picked up a win in the final match of the 2007 Manhattan College Invitational with a 3-1 score over the host Jaspers of Manhattan College. Newcomers Whitney Johnson and Christina Estebane' along with sophomore Caylin Woodward combined for 48 kills and 48 digs while Estebane' fell one kill shy of a prestigious triple double.
UMES was in command from the start taking games one and two by scores of 30-21 and 30-22 respectively. Manhattan rallied in game three to win 35-33 in `overtime' and got strong play from Diane Struther who finished with a match high 23 kills. No other Jasper would break double digits in kills.
Estebane' was the Hawks shining star in the match posting nine kills, 48 assists and 18 digs while fellow newcomer Johnson led the Hawks in kills with 22 and had a solid 11 digs to go along with it. Woodward posted 17 kills, third highest in the match and played well on defense, amassing 19 digs. Johnson and Adora Luster also had a solo block in the contest while Luster added nine kills.
Game three, the one game UMES dropped, was their lowest hitting of the match at just a .035 clip while they hit a solid .168 overall and .300 in game one. UMES also tallied 15 aces, four each coming from Estebane' and Holiday Eller.
The Hawks were solid on service also returning the balls well. The Jaspers recorded just four aces to seven errors.
The Hawks are back in action next weekend when they travel to Easton, Pa. to play in a tournament hosted by Lafayette College. They will face Fairleigh Dickinson, George Washington and the host school.
