PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's volleyball team dropped a tough match to the University of Delaware (UD) 3-1 (25-18, 28-26, 22-25, 28-26). This is their first loss in 10 games, bringing their record to 15-7.
Christina EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© (El Paso, Texas) was one of three Lady Hawks to have double-doubles. She finished with a game-high 48 assists and 17 digs. Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) led the attack for UMES with a team-high 17 kills and 15 digs, while Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.) totaled 11 kills and 17digs. Leah Amundson (Tuscon, Ariz.) had a team-high 21 digs.
The score was tied four times in the second set before UD (7-12) went on a 5-0 run. The Lady Hawks forced a Blue Hen timeout after battling back to within two points, putting the score 20-18. When a kill from Meghan Bonk had UD on set point 24-21, UMES fought back going on a 3-0 run to tie the game 24 all. The teams traded sideout points, until UD ended the set on a kill by Elena DelleDonne.
"We made some subsitutions behind the line serving because we gave up a lot of points in the first set," said Head Coach Don Metil. "You can't beat a team like Delaware who went to the NCAA tournament, and advanced in the tournament to the second round, if you're going to be careless behind the line."
The Lady Hawks used falling 26-28 in the second set as fuel, and came out on fire in the third. Hitting 69-percent from the floor, UMES went on a 6-1 run to take the lead after the set had been tied eight times. UD called timeout after an attack error by DelleDonne put the Lady Hawks up 22-16, their biggest lead of the day. The Blue Hens came back to within three, but the set ended on a UD attack error.
For the Blue Hens, Katie Dennehy finished with a game-high 18 kills and 10 digs. Stephanie Barry had a game-high 24 digs and Jess Chason had a team-high 43 assists.
"At the end of the day," said Metil, "I told them that I am very happy with the way we are playing and we can play better."
UMES will head back to conference play on Friday, October 10 when they travel to take on Hampton University. The 3-21 Lady Pirates are currently tied for second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division.
