LADY HAWKS CAN'T CATCH UMBC

Nov. 30, 2008

Box Score

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - It's hard to argue with near perfection. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) put up a 20-plus lead on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) going 21-30 from the field and hitting 7-7 from behind the arc in the first half of their matchup. The Lady Hawks were not able to close the gap and fell 92-70 in the final day of the Iona Thanksgiving Classic.

The score would be tied twice in the first half before UMBC (3-2) had 13 unanswered points. A jumper by freshman Kanzes Battin (Wilmington, Del.) with 12:41 on the clock would stop the Retrievers run. Battin put the Lady Hawks to within eight on a layup with 8:30 left in the half before UMBC began to pull away again. Josephine McLane (Centerville, Va.) hit a three with 1:25 remaining to break a 14-1 Retriever run. UMES (0-4) would score seven of the last ten points going into halftime to shift the momentum.

Keeping the movement going, McLane hit two three's early to start pulling UMES closer. A layup by Battin with 9:02 left in the game would pull the Lady Hawks to within 15, but UMBC continued to hit shots consistently and held their lead intact.

McLane led UMES with 16 points. Battin doubled her career high in points, finishing with 13, and led with a team-high six rebounds. Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied Battin with 13 points and Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) rounded out the Lady Hawks in double figures with 12.

Erin Brown finished with a double-double for UMBC, grabbing 11 rebounds and netting 22 points. Michelle Kurowski, Carlee Cassidy and Katie Brooks would finish with 19, 18 and 14 points respectively.

UMES will look to rebound at home as they face off against Patriot League member American University on December 2 at 6 p.m. in the William P. Hytche Center.
