EMMITSBURG, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) was held to just three hits as Mount Saint Mary's pitched a three-hit shut out on the arm of Costa Kapothanasis. The Mount posted 12 hits and 10 runs on way to a 10-0 shutout at Straw Family Stadium.
The Hawks managed just three hits on the day, coming off of the bats of Jorge Pichardo, Tyler Love and a double from Russell Deutschmann. The Hawks offense had only one runner reach third base in the game.
Kapothanasis struck out eight Hawks while improving to 1-1 on the season. Ken Richardson took the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned in six innings of work.
In comparison, Kyle Kane had two doubles in the game. The Mount took the lead in the bottom of the second when Kane doubled to right center field to score Ryan Murray, who walked with one out. The Mount added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take control of the game. First baseman Josh Vittek belted his eighth home run, a two-run bomb over the right field fence, to give the Mount a 3-0 advantage. Kane doubled with one out and later scored on a UMES error for a 4-0 lead.
The Mount added three runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win. In the sixth, Alex Andrews doubled down the left field line to plate Joe Kavanagh. Drew Counselman and Shane Eyler added RBI singles as well in the frame. In the seventh, Eyler had a two-run base hit while the final run scored on an error.
Eyler went 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI for the Mount while Kane was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Counselman also added two hits in the contest while Andrews had two runs scored in addition to his RBI double.
