Box Score

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It was a tough weekend for the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). They headed south to the sunny weather of Florida and took on the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) top team, the Bethune-Cookman University (BC-U) Wildcats. BC-U, ranked #1 by BlackCollegeBaseball.com, took all three games from UMES to earn the sweep. They took a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 19-0 and 11-3 and then pounded the Hawks in the third game, 23-3. The games improve the Wildcats to 28-17 (15-0 MEAC) and drop UMES to 5-39 (4-12 MEAC).

The following recaps appear compliments of the Bethune-Cookman Media Relations Office.

Bethune-Cookman University used a powerful hitting performance and superb pitching to surpass the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in a MEAC baseball doubleheader held at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Fla. The `Cats won the first game 19-0, while coming back to take the nightcap 11-3.

Bethune-Cookman took over early in the first game with 10 runs in the opening inning off UMES starting pitcher Elliott Arrington. Arrington threw 60 pitches for the Hawks and gave up 10 earned runs on four hits with three walks issued in just two-thirds of an inning. The Maroon and Gold express appropriately took advantage.

After Neal Jones scored Mark Brooks from third on an RBI sacrifice, senior shortstop JosÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© Lozada became the first B-CU player in recent years to steal home base for a 2-0 B-CU advantage. The Wildcats pushed their advantage out further with a Patrick Jones three-run double to straight away center field. On Lozada's next plate appearance in the inning, he posted a three-run homerun inside the park to put the `Cats up on top, 10-0.

UMES reliever Jervonta' Wright took over for the Hawks to complete the first frame.

Brooks pushed the lead out farther in the third with a RBI triple to plate Patrick Jones. First baseman Osvaldo Torres led off the next inning with his sixth homerun of the year to push the lead out to 12-0 in favor of the Wildcats.

In the fifth inning, Brooks scored again on a wild pitch from UMES' Wright, while freshman third baseman Emmanuel Castro blasted his fifth homer of the year with a two-run shot to left field. The game was halted after seven innings with the run-rule in effect and the score standing at 19-0.

In the second game, the score got out of hand early, but the Wildcats were unable to find a hit. UMES hurler Carl Huber was unable to find the zone early as he walked nine batters in the first two innings to allow seven runs to cross for the Maroon and Gold. Added an error and a few wild pitches, and B-CU led 7-0 right off the bat.

Brooks collected a RBI sacrifice fly in the third to plate Drew Clark. That put the `Cats, 8-0.

Emmanuel Castro plated a two RBI triple--his first of the year, in the fourth inning. That allowed Neal Jones and Torres to score on the play, stretching the B-CU lead out to 11-0.

Bethune-Cookman University completed the three-game series sweep of conference foe UMES on Sunday afternoon winning the contest 23-3 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Once again it was great pitching and extremely powerful hitting that helped B-CU to the win on Sunday. B-CU starting pitcher Felix Machado was almost untouchable in four quick innings on the hill. The sophomore right-hander allowed just two hits and struck-out two batters in the win.

B-CU was celebrating Senior Appreciation Day today for five group of young men that have given their all for the Wildcats this season and beyond. B-CVU said "Good Bye" to JosÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© Lozada, Phil Enright, Neal Jones, Darrin Young and Osvaldo Torres with a big statement win in the league.

Osvaldo Torres was a blistering 3-for-4 on the day at the plate as the senior first baseman blasted two (2) homeruns to up his total to eight on the year. Right behind him was junior transfer Aaron Patterson as he lifted a grand slam homerun--the first since Alejandro Jimenez in the MEAC Championship game two years ago (2006) against ... Maryland Eastern Shore. For Patterson, it was his first homer of the season.

Already leading 7-0 after two innings away, B-CU scored their largest amount of runs in an innings in more than three years with 12 runs in the third off UMES starting pitcher Russell Deutschmann.

The big inning was highlighted by homeruns from Torres and Patterson. That big inning moved B-CU's lead out to 19-0.

The `Cats added four runs in the fifth inning to increase the lead. Second baseman Cameron McGriff collected a two-run scoring single to centerfield to plate Torres and Jorge Velez.

UMES jumped on the board in the sixth frame as relief pitcher Darrin Young allowed three runs on two hits in the frame. The Hawks centerfielder Phil Vaughn kicked off the inning with a triple to right and came around to score via Jorge Pichardo's single to second base. Deutschmann scored Pat Hercinger later in the inning with a sacrifice fly.

The win went to Machado who evened his record for the year at 3-3. The loss was given to Deutschmann who dropped to 0-2 with 19 runs allowed (four earned) and 13 hits with six walks.

UMES was led at the plate by the play of Pichardo and Deutschmann who each had a hit and RBI. B-CU used the bat of Torres, Lozada and junior right fielder Patrick Jones as each had three hits on the day.

The Hawks now head to Washington D.C. for a double header against the Colonials on Wednesday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
