BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) Christina Estebane' (El Paso, Texas/Midland College), and Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bayside HS) were both named to the All-Tournament Team of the Ramada Invitational this past weekend. The event, hosted by the University at Buffalo, saw the Hawks leave New York with a 1-2 record, now 4-5 overall, and with the runner-up title of the tournament.
Estebane', the Lady Hawks' senior setter, had a good outing on the weekend, posting 15 kills on 53 swings, with amazingly, only one error. She tallied 110 assists over 12 games and was instrumental in almost knocking off tournament champion Butler. UMES fell to the Bulldogs 3-2. Estebane' served up an ace and defensively had 44 digs over the three matches, the last of which was a 3-0 win over Maine.
Chukwura, was also impressive, tallying 18 kills on 39 attacks with only three errors, an amazing percentage of .385. She added six blocks to the Hawk defensive effort.
Butler, who finished 3-0 on the weekend, had the tournament MVP in Porshia Allen as well as Dana Daprile and Jessica Wolf on the All-Tournament Team. Kristin Bignell from Buffalo and Liindsay Allman from Maine were also on the squad.
Estebane' and Chukwura will lead the Hawks into more of their brutal road schedule this coming weekend when they head to Williamsburg, Va. to battle William & Mary, Elon and Radford in another tournament. Before that the Lady Hawks have a non-conference match against Norfolk State on Tuesday the 16th.
