UMES SWEEPS MEAC AWARDS; ESTEBANE' & EDWARDS RECOGNIZED

Sept. 2, 2008

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - While the wins and losses were not as they would have liked, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Volleyball Team has a lot to proud of after their opening weekend of action. They traveled to Blacksburg, Va. where they nearly knocked off ACC power Virginia Tech and suffered a heartbreaking loss to Coastal Carolina before topping Winston-Salem State. Christina Estebane' (El Paso, Texas/Midland College) was one of the stars of the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

It was just the first award she would get for her play this year, the second came today, as she was named the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week. Estebane' recorded 14 kills, four aces and 36 digs in three matches while averaging a hitting percentage of .213. She tallied 110 assists over 12 sets at the Hawthorn Suites Hokie Invitational.

MEAC Rookie of the Week Christine Edwards.

Joining Estebane' for her first collegiate honor was freshman Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif./ St. Joseph HS) who had a solid outing at the same event and earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors. She played 12 sets as well and tallied a .220 hitting percentage on 39 kills with 100 attacks. Her serving was the key however, as Edwards tallied 11 aces over the two days and added seven blocks and 14 digs.

Estebane' and Edwards lead their Hawks back into action this coming weekend at the UMBC Tournament, hosted by UMBC and featuring Niagara and Duquesne.
