VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - With the stellar performance of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) women's volleyball team, it is no surprise Christina EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© (El Paso, Texas/Midland College) and Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif./ St. Joseph HS) were named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player and Rookie of the Week.
EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© finished the weekend with 141 assists, 31 digs and 23 aces. Helping her team stay undefeated in the Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Lady Rams Invitational, EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© averaged 1.64 aces per set. She was also voted to the All-Tournament Team.
EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© is ranked eighth in the nation in aces per set and leads the team this season with 612 assists and 202 digs. She averages 9.4 assists per set.
Edwards was phenomenal at the net, putting down 63 kills over the weekend. Behind the line, she dropped in 15 aces. Named the Lady Rams Invitational Most Valuable Player, Edwards led the team in kills in their 3-1 win over North Carolina Central University.
She leads the team with 224 kills and is second in aces with 33.
This is the second time EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© and Edwards have swept the honors, the last being coming the week of September 2. The Lady Hawks need EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© and Edwards to lead them over MEAC rivals Morgan State and Delaware State in UMES' first home matches of the season. Morgan (1-16) will be on October 3, and the much anticipated match-up against Delaware State (7-7) will be on October 5.
