BALTIMORE, Md. -
After an impressive showing at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Tournament this past weekend, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball juniorWhitney Johnson and freshman Christine Edwards were both named to the All-Tournament Team. The two have been phenomenal on the outside for the Lady Hawks this season, combining for over half of the teams' kills. Johnson and Edwards are proving to be a key component in second year Head Coach Don Metil's plans for repeating the 10-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) record from last season. "Johnson and Edwards stepped up and played great in the tournament," said Metil. "They are part of the reason why we were able to come away 2-1 and I think they will only get better as the season progresses."
Johnson, the 2007 MEAC Player of the Year, averaged 2.69 kills per game during the tournament and has amassed an impressive 89 kills this season. With a healthy bit of competition going, Edwards put down 49 kills this weekend, bringing her season total to just one shy of Johnson's at 88.
"I am very pleased with the way both Johnson and Edwards have played this season," said Metil. "They have the ability and potential to do great things for this team."
Among other things, UMES will need this one-two combo to be firing on all cylinders when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. for the Ramada Invitational on September 12-13. The Lady Hawks will face off against Buffalo, Maine and Butler.
