With the win, the UMES (6-12) picked up its first back-to-back road wins since Feb. 7-9, 2004 at Delaware State and Howard, respectively. The Hawks also swept their first season series since 2002-03 (against North Carolina A&T). The loss dropped NJIT to 1-20 on the year.
"I thought our kids really found a way to win," said UMES head coach Frankie Allen. "We did a good job in terms of finishing the game up. ... I'm really proud of them because we had that tough loss against Bethune-Cookman [58-55 Monday]. But in years past, those types of losses would have been compounded by going on the road and losing a game that was obviously a very winnable game.
"But they found away to win," he said. "That tells me this team is buying into our system, they're believing in what we're trying to tell them and I really feel good about our progress and how much this team is maturing."
