BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior Whitney Jonson (Prince Frederick, Md.) and sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) recorded double-digit kills to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team over Coppin State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-7) at the Coppin Center Sunday.
Edwards had 14 kills and Johnson 11 to go along with three and seven digs, respectively. With the win, UMES' sixth straight, the Hawks improved to 15-6 and 4-0 in the MEAC. Coppin State fell to 1-23 (0-4 in conference).
The Hawks held the CSU offense to a 0.42 hitting percentage (17 kills, 14 errors, 72 total attacks) while UMES hit .333 (42 kills, 14 errors, 84 total attacks) from the floor.
Senior Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.) and sophomore Rebecca Prado (Annandale, N.J.) each tallied a match-high eight digs on defense for the Hawks while sophomore Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) registered three of the team's nine aces on the day. Freshman Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas) had a match-best 34 assists.
UMES never trailed in the first and third game on their way to the straight-set victory. A Woodward kill that ended a run of five consecutive points for the Hawks gave UMES a 10-point lead in the first game at 18-8. UMES reeled off seven of the next 14 points, ending with a Coppin attack error, to take the game.
Coppin's Ashley Saunders gave the hosts a 4-2 advantage early in the second game but the Hawks quickly rested the lead back, going up 5-4 on an Eagles' error, and did not relinquish control the rest of the match.
After a Coppin State timeout, UMES tallied five consecutive points, a run capped with another Eagles' error. The Hawks' largest lead of the game came on game point as Edwards had the second of back-to-back kills to put her team up, 2-0.
The Hawks built a 10-3 edge by the first timeout of the third game. The lead grew to 20-4 by the second Coppin break of the game. A block by Saunders and Salena Weekly gave the Eagles their final point of the match at 23-7 before a Saunders error later spelled the end of the day for CSU.
Saunders led the Coppin State with six kills while Jazmin Brown had five digs and Tricia Baczek had 13 assists in the loss. The Eagles did win the blocking battle, 3.0-2.0.
UMES next travels to play Howard Friday (Oct. 23) at 7 p.m.
