PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.) recorded a triple-double of 10 kills, 10 digs and 10 assists as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team extended its winning streak to nine matches with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) win over Delaware State at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Friday.
The victory for UMES, which outhit the Hornets, .264-.156, improved the Hawks to 18-6, and 7-0 in the MEAC. The loss for DSU snapped a four-match winning streak and dropped the visitors to 15-12 and 5-2 in conference.
Woodward's 10 kills tied for a match-high with DSU's Martina Ferrari while the Hawks' sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) registered a match-high 12 to go along with six digs.
Woodward led UMES with a .444 hitting percentage, including just two errors on 18 attacks. She also chipped in with a match-best four of the team's 12 service aces.
Freshman Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas) had 24 of the UMES' 34 assists.
Elisa Hermann gave Delaware State a 3-1 lead in the first set but the Hawks quickly erased the deficit with seven straight points to take an 8-3 advantage. The run included two kills from Woodward and a pair of Hornets' errors.
UMES closed the game on an ace from Edwards in front of Cassandra Joyner which gave the Hawks their largest lead of the game and a 1-0 lead.
UMES didn't lose the lead in game two but only had a 20-16 edge when they called a timeout after a Maja Rudolf kill. The Hawks tallied five of the last eight points in the game and took the game on a Sarah Wheatcroft service error.
UMES had a 20-18 lead at the first timeout of the final game. The Hawks came out of the break kills from Woodward and senior Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados) to earn a 22-18 edge and allowed just two more Delaware State points the rest of night.
Wheatcroft led DSU with 10 kills and had a .471 hitting percentage. She also had a team-high three block assists to help the squad to a 6.0-4.5 advantage in blocks. Ferrari had all of the Hornets' 29 assists on the night.
UMES travels to Hampton, Va. to play the Lady Pirates at 3 p.m. at Holland Hall Sunday.
