JOHNSON NAMED TO COBRA MAGAZINE ALL-NATIONAL SECOND TEAM

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) has been named to the COBRA Magazine All-National Second Team, magazine creator Geezus Zaire made the announcement Tuesday.

A total of 45 players were named to COBRA's three teams. The publication details the talents of African-American volleyball players on all levels of the game. The national teams were made up of collegiate student-athletes from throughout the country.

Johnson, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, led the Lady Hawks to their third consecutive 20-win season and a berth in the MEAC championship match for the third time in as many years. She was named to the All-MEAC First Team for the second for the second time in her career in 2009.

Johnson finished second on the team and third in the conference in hitting percentage (.329), second and sixth in the MEAC in kills per game (3.13), second and sixth in the MEAC in points per game (3.74) and third and seventh in the MEAC in aces per game (0.37) on the season. She helped UMES to a 24-7 record, including the team's third straight unbeaten conference under head coach Don Metil.

Johnson was tabbed for four all-tournament teams on the year, including being part of the MEAC Championship All-Tournament Team. She earned her 1,000th-career kill with nine in a win against La Salle at Delaware State on Sept. 12, finishing with 1,228 total.
