HAMPTON, Va. - The Hampton University women's basketball team went on a 9-3 run in the final minutes to pull out their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) 57-47. The Lady Hawks (10-11) fall to 6-4 in the MEAC.
April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) extended her double-double streak to six tonight. She led the Lady Hawks with team highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) both finished in double-digits with 12 and 10 points respectively.
"I really appreciate what [April's] able to give us night in and night out," said Head Coach Fred Batchelor, "but it was very disappointing. We gave away a game I thought we should have won."
UMES was up by as much as eight in the second half when Hampton mounted an attack going on a 14-1 run to push ahead 46-41 with 5:13 left on the clock. Reid put the Lady Hawks to within four after grabbing an offensive rebound and putting in the layup with 3:44 to play in the game. But Hampton (9-12, 6-4 MEAC) would control the remainder of the game to and close out the contest.
Jerika Jenkins led the Lady Pirates with a game-high 16 points and Chinyere Ukoh finished with a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds.
