DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Junior right-hander Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.) threw six innings, scattering eight hits, but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore was eliminated from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament by Norfolk State, 4-0, at Jackie Robinson Ballpark Friday.
The Hawks finish the season at 14-42, an eight-win improvement over 2008. The Spartans (22-22), who defeated Delaware State, 5-3, earlier in the day, advance to play Florida A&M Saturday at 10 a.m.
NSU starter Chase Davenport went 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits and five walks while striking out five to get the win, to improve to 6-5 on the season.
Three Spartans had two hits apiece. Andrew Suttmiller, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI, led NSU. Juan Herrera was also 1-fot-2 with two runs scored.
UMES senior first baseman Russel Deutschmann (Baden, Ontario) had two hits in four at-bats. Center fielder Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) was 1-for-3 with his 28th steal of the season and designated hitter Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) added his team-leading 13th double of the season.
Each team stranded 11 baserunners in the game.
Norfolk State opened the scoring in the second inning as Herrera made it 1-0 Spartans. Herrera singled up the middle to start the inning and was sacrificed to second. Jerrod Farley followed with an RBI single to center field. Zimmerman got out of further trouble, picking Farley off at third base after he had stolen second.
The Spartans went up, 2-0, in the third as Farley drew a bases-loaded walk that brought John Lynch in from third. Lynch began the frame with an infield single to second base.
NSU lengthened its lead to three in the sixth. Cameron Parsons reached on a one-out bunt single to third, TiQuan Griffin followed with a single and Lynch was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chris Joyce struck out swinging for the second out but a wild pitch by Zimmerman allowed Parsons to score from third and make for the final margin.
The Hawks loaded the bases themselves twice in the contest - once in the fifth and again in the seventh - but couldn't cash in on the opportunities.
Ryan Shook picked up his third save of the year, coming in a save situation and pitching the final 2.1 innings. He allowed one hit, one walk and fanned one.
UMES senior lefty Brian White (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a good showing in his last outing as a Hawk. He threw two innings, surrendering just one hit to keep his team in the game. Zimmerman fell to 3-8 with the loss.
Deutschmann, White, Pat Hercinger (Papillion, Neb.), Jorge Pichardo (La Vega Dominican Republic), Tyler Love (Palmyra, Pa.), Michael Guy (Lake Ariel, Pa.) and Josh Dunham (Des Moines, Iowa) saw their careers came to an end.
