WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood Calif.) collected a match-high 22 kills and added 12 digs and freshman Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas) contributed a match-best 45 assists and 10 digs but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team fell, 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 23-25, 17-25), to William & Mary in the Tribe Invitational at Kaplan Arena Friday.

The loss for the Hawks drops them to 1-1 on the season after defeating North Carolina A&T, 3-0, earlier in the day. The Tribe improves to 2-0 as it beat Rider, 3-0, also earlier.

Senior Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.) paced all players with 19 digs, while sophomore Rebecca Prado (Annandale, N.J.) chipped in with 13. Redshirt junior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had five kills and a match-high four block assists to go with a .455 hitting percentage.

William & Mary's Jordyn Maloney had 42 assists, 10 digs and three service aces for the Tribe, who outhit UMES, .242-.221, for the match. Erin Skipper totaled 18 kills and Lauren Powell had 11 for the hosts.

The teams traded points early in the opening set, when, at 5-5, the Tribe scored four straight five points. Senior Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) quelled the momentum with a kill that made it 9-6 prior to a UMES timeout.

The Hawks got one closer on another Johnson kill before she committed a service error for a 10-7 deficit. UMES stuck around in the game and answered with an Edwards kill off a Romero assist to stay within three at 13-10.

The lead grew to 19-13, W&M's biggest advantage of the game, on a Skipper kill, but another Edwards kill coming out of a timeout cut the score to 21-19. Ginny Bray closed the game with a kill of her own to put the Tribe up, 1-0.

Two consecutive Lindsey Pflugner aces helped pace William & Mary to a 4-0 lead in the second game. UMES was able to battle back to take control of the game at 10-8. The Hawks then opened a four-point bulge, 16-12, with an ace from Edwards following a Tribe timeout.

Leading 17-15, UMES rattled off three points capped by a Johnson kill to make it 20-15. The preseason All-MEAC First Team selection had 12 in the match.

A Prado service error got W&M within to three at 22-19, but UMES prevailed in the game with an Edwards kill to take the five-point win.

The Hawks tallied the first eight points of the third game on an ace from Woodward and a kill from Edwards coupled with a string errors by the hosts. William & Mary regained its footing and knotted the game at 13 with a Brooke Bauernfeind kill. Two Hawk errors and a Tribe kill made it a 16-13 game before two more Bauernfeind points pushed the lead to 18-14.

The Hawks got to within one on an Edwards swing at 21-20, but Powell later countered with one of her own to win the game for W&M.

The Tribe controlled the fourth game most of the way but UMES did force a deadlock at 13-all on an attack error by Powell. The Hawks never led in the fourth and scored just four more times in the match, dropping the game by eight.

UMES is back on the court at noon Saturday, playing Ohio State before closing the tournament with a match with Rider at 5 p.m.
