ROMERO NAMED MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman setter Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas) was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Romero helped the women's volleyball team to a 2-2 record at the Tribe Invitational, hosted by William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., over the weekend.

Romero posted two double-doubles in the tournament. She had 44 assists and 10 digs in a 3-1 loss to the Tribe Friday and followed that up with 25 assists and 13 digs in a straight-set victory against Rider Saturday. She totaled 115 assists, 31 digs, five service aces and three block assists in the four matches.

Sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) was also recognized by the conference as an Other Top Performer. She picked up a double-double of her own against William and Mary with 22 kills and 12 digs.

Edwards averaged 11.5 kills and 6.25 per match on the way to being named to the all-tournament team.

UMES travels to Boiling Springs, N.C., to play in the Runnin' Bulldog Classic, hosted by Gardner-Webb Sept. 5-6. The Hawks will also face Wofford on the weekend.
