PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team got a team-high eight kills from sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) but it wasn't enough as the Hawks fell, 3-0 (25-23.25-19, 25-21), to Sacred Heart to Open the Hampton Inn Salisbury North Invitational Saturday.
The loss for UMES (9-6) in its home opener was its first at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center since Nov. 9, 2006 to Morgan State, a 16-match span. The win for the Pioneers (9-6) is their second consecutive.
Edwards added 10 digs for the Hawks, who close the tournament with a 4:30 p.m. match with Norfolk State. Senior Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, (Calif.) tallied 13 for UMES.
The Pioneers outhit the Hawks, .160-.128, but UMES outblocked the visitors 6.5-3.5.
The first set was knotted at 14 after a Sacred Heart timeout when Edwards tallied a kill on a Bella Jade Romero (Arlington Texas) assist. The freshman setter had 23 assists in the match.
The Pioneers took control of the set, outscoring the Hawks, 11-9 the rest of the game to take a 1-0 lead.
SHU led, 18-13, after two straight aces by Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek forcing a UMES timeout. A Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) kill cut the deficit to four at 19-15 before Sacred Heart closed the game with six of the last 10 points.
Sacred Heart took the third game as well despite the Hawks getting as close as two points at 22-20.
For the Pioneers, Maile Herthington led the team with 10 kills while Kidd-Kadlubek had 31 assists. Jessica Colberg (12) and Ashlyn Trimble (11) each had double-digit kills.
