Box Score
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team led by four points going into halftime, but Bethune-Cookman was too much to handle in the second half as they defeated the Hawks, 63-51, at Moore Gymnasium Monday.
The Wildcats scored 22 points in the paint and had 23 second-chance points in the second half, compared to the Hawks' two and six, respectively.
Freshman Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) scored in double-digits for the third consecutive game and once again narrowly missed a double-double with his 13 points and eight rebounds. Junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) and redshirt freshman Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) each scored nine points in the loss.
The first half was a low-scoring affair, but UMES took the lead, 7-2, with a 3-pointer by Robertson, just four minutes into the game. The Hawks held BCU to just two points until free throws by CJ Reed brought the score to 13-4 under the 10-minute mark.
UMES went back up by 13 at 16-4 with another 3-pointer by Robertson, who was double-teamed on the shot.
Immediately coming out of the third media timeout, Berry tipped-in the inbounds pass from redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) to make the score 20-9.
The Wildcats scored the last five points of the first half to come within four at 28-24.
The Hawks came out of the locker room slowly and didn't score their first field goal until a layup by Burns at the 13:30 mark. Just over a minute later junior Josh Bright (Salisbury, Md.) stole the ball from BCU's Reed and gave it up to Burns for a 3-pointer to tie the game at 38-38.
Another 3-pointer by Haley at the 5:43 mark brought UMES within five at 54-49, which is the closest they would only score two free throws in the remaining minutes.
The Hawks shot just .235 from the field in the second half, compared to the Wildcats' .400.
Reed led all scorers with 21 points for BCU and Albert Abrahams registered a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
UMES returns to Maryland to take on Coppin State in Baltimore Saturday at 7:30 p.m
