NEW YORK, N.Y. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's indoor track and field teams continued their season with the Albany Great Dane Classic at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y. Friday.
With over 40 schools and track clubs from the Northeast, Florida and Puerto Rico, the Hawks fared well in the meet. The men's team placed 7th overall with 33 points while the women's team was 8th with 36.
Fifteen UMES participants placed in the top 10 of their respective events while nine were in the top five.
Sophomore Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) topped 22 throwers for the gold in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.73m. Her distance was her personal best for the season and also a season-best for the Lady Hawks. Henry also placed seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 15.05m.
Junior Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) ran a time of 2:17.16 in the 800m, which was good for second overall. Sophomore Cynthia Anais (Paris, France) also placed second in her event, the mile, with a time of 5:03.28, both her best and the team's seasonal best. In the 55m hurdles, senior Ariana Forbes (Baltimore, Md.) had a time of 8.31 to place fourth.
In the men's side, sophomore Akheem Gauntlett (Roselle, N.J.) and junior Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.) took second place in their respective events. Gauntlett ran a time of 21:68 in the 200m while Keane-Dawes had a time of 48.06 in the 400m.
The 4x400 relay team consisting of Keane-Dawes, senior Allodin Fothergill (New Hempstead, N.Y.), junior Paul Jones-Burden (Rahway, N.J.) and Gauntlett placed third out of 44 teams with a time of 3:16.63.
Sophomore Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md.) and freshman Marcus Brown (Gaithersburg, Md.) took fourth and fifth places, respectively, in their events. Dix ran a 7.74 in the 55m hurdles while Brown threw a distance of 15.66 in the shot put.
UMES next travels to State College, Pa. for the Penn State Invitational on Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30.
