PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) went 7-for-10 from behind the arc and scored 33 points to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team over Howard, 67-66, at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday.
Haley's previous career-high in points was 22, which he scored at Marquette on November 17. He also broke his career highs in field goals with 11 (previous was eight, also at Marquette) and 3-pointers made with seven (previous was two, which he had done twice).
"Hillary was lights out tonight," said head coach Frankie Allen. "He is what really got us going and gave us energy in the long run."
Haley scored the last 23 of 28 points for the Hawks, including 20 of 25 in the second half.
"I do what I can to help the team," said Haley. "I was trying to do a lot of different things and I just hit a lot of shots. I was really feeling it tonight."
UMES as a team shot 48 percent from the field, including 53.1 percent in the first half, to move to 6-14 on the year and 4-3 in MEAC play. The Bison fall to 6-16 on the season and 5-3 in the MEAC with the loss.
Junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) also scored in double-digits with 14 points and three steals. Senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) grabbed nine rebounds while registering five points for the Hawks.
The first half was a teeter-totter affair for UMES and Howard as the lead changed 11 times and the score was tied five times.
The Hawks grabbed their first lead of the day off of an offensive rebound by Haley, who then put it back up for a basket to make things 6-4 at the 16:44 mark. UMES got a streak going and the crowd excited with a steal and layup by Burns at the 11:27 mark and then a steal and dunk by Haley just over 10 seconds later to go up 16-15.
Haley hit his first 3-pointer of many in the game at the 6:02 mark to go up once again at 27-25. To continue a common theme, Haley knocked down a trey to go into halftime, up 42-34.
The trend resumed in the second half where Haley started the Hawks off with another shot from downtown at the 18-minute mark to go up 42-36.
At the 13:10 mark, Haley grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled the length of the court for a lay-in to make the score 47-44.
To break a string of Haley scores, Pitt shook off multiple defenders and powered through the opposition to finish a layup while being fouled. He capped the three-point play with a made free throw to go up by 13 at 60-47 with 6:45 remaining.
UMES made their last field goal at the 3:54 mark with a jumper by Haley. Free throws by Haley and White brought the Hawks to their final 67 points. The Bison would come within three at 67-66 with four seconds remaining with a 3-pointer by Curtis White.
White led Howard with 17 points and four assists. Adam Walker led the Bison with nine rebounds.
Saturday also marked the American Cancer Society and National Basketball Coaches Association's Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Weekend, where all coaches and their staffs wore sneakers to show their support in the fight against cancer.
UMES continues their home stand with a game against Hampton on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
