PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- A weekend against strong competition ended in strong fashion for the Hawks, with the volleyball and cross country squads finishing in victory over conference opponents. Plus, the bowling team is off to a good start after their trip to Texas.
VOLLEYBALL
UMES began MEAC action as they hosted fellow Northern Division opponents Morgan State on Friday and Delaware State on Sunday, winning 3-0 over each team.
The two victories improved the Hawks to 13-9 overall and 2-0 in conference play, good for sole first place of the MEAC Northern Division. UMES has won 12 of its last 14 matches plus has not dropped a set in its last seven matches.
Junior Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded 13 kills in each match plus had five service aces against Delaware State. Freshman Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) got double digit kills each match and sophomore Stephanie Sierra (El Paso, Texas) recorded 71 assists and six kills to start conference play.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Hawks took first place in the Delaware State Invitational in men's and women's cross country over the weekend.
Sophomore Basil Melek (Grand Prairie, Texas) for the men's side and junior Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France) for the women's side won the 5K race with times of 15:16.02 and 19:18.16 respectively. Each were named UMES Athletes of the Week for their respective performances.
The Hawks the next four finishes on the men's side with senior Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) in 15:00.02, senior Peter Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya) in 16:05.02 and junior Shadrack Maritim (Kericho, Kenya) finishing in 16:18.00.
Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) took fourth place on the women's side with a time of 19:49.16.
BOWLING
UMES started their season off strong, winning their first two games of the year against Prairie View A&M, one in team play 1063-803 and one in Bakers 748-671.
Anggie Ramirez, who won MEAC Rookie of the Year last season, posted the high score with 234, followed by Martha Perez's score of 226. The team was rounded out by Paula Vilas with 205, reigning MEAC Player of the Year Maria Rodriguez bowling 200 and Kristina Frahm rounding out the squad with 198.
The team of Perez, Ramirez, Rodriguez, Vilas and Stacy Parsons (Delran, N.J.) combined for a 748-671 win in Bakers.
UPCOMING WEEK (OCT. 11-17)
Hawk Hysteria is set for Friday, October 15th. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. at the Hytche Athletic Center as the volleyball team takes on Hampton. Afterwards the men's and women's basketball will begin their first official practice and play a scrimmage during the event. Attendance is free to all fans plus will be broadcast on the Hawks Radio Network.
The volleyball squad will play a second conference match on Sunday as they host Coppin State at 3:00 p.m. This match will also be broadcast on the Hawks Radio Network.
Cross Country will head north as they compete in the Delaware Blue and Gold Invitational on Saturday, October 16th. This will be the third time the Hawks will compete in the state of Delaware; each previous time UMES took first place.
The Hawks baseball team will play their annual alumni game on Saturday, October 16th. The event begins with batting practice at 10:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m. the players will have a home run derby. The game itself will begin after the derby, followed by a picnic for all players and family. Attending the contest at Hawk Field is free.
